Don’t Quench a faintly burning Wick

Isaiah 42:3 (ESV) reads, “A bruised reed he will not break, 

and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will 

faithfully bring forth justice.”

This verse paints a vivid picture of God’s compassion and tenderness towards those who may find themselves spiritually, and or emotionally bruised or struggling. The metaphor of a faintly burning wick conveys the fragility of our emotions, faith, understanding, agility, and strength at times, emphasizing God’s commitment to nurture and restore rather than extinguish.

In today’s life, we are having people put in our community who are having different challenges. Some are extremely not on pace compared to the rest of the people. Unfortunately, some of the people who are supposed to help others have become so slothful in helping, and hasty in kicking them out.

The Real-Life Example:

Meet Sarah, a devoted Christian who, like many of us, faced seasons of doubt and spiritual weariness. In the midst of life’s challenges, Sarah’s once radiant faith began to dim. The demands of her career, family responsibilities, and unexpected trials cast a shadow over the flame that once burned brightly.

Instead of abandoning her, God used the support of a faithful community to embody the essence of Isaiah 42:3. Friends, family, and fellow believers recognized the faintly burning wick within Sarah and chose not to quench it but to fan the flames of her faith through prayer, encouragement, and understanding.

As Sarah attended a small group Bible study, her fellow believers listened without judgment, offering a safe space for her to share her struggles. As she joined a team, many people were quick to identify the musically weak parts of her life, soon she became an object of scorn. The treatment that Caroline was given was a dangerous one that put out her faint wick. While that of Sarah made her wick to blossom.

1. Prayer: Just as Sarah’s community prayed for her, we should actively intercede for those facing spiritual struggles. Prayer is a powerful tool that can ignite and sustain the flames of faith.

2. Encouragement: Offer words of encouragement and affirmation. Remind others of God’s promises and the unwavering love He has for them. A timely word of encouragement can be a beacon of hope in a dark season.

3. Supportive Community: Surrounding ourselves with a supportive community is essential. In times of spiritual weakness, having fellow believers who can empathize, share wisdom, and stand with us can make a significant difference.

As we navigate the intricate tapestry of faith, let us be mindful of the faintly burning wicks around us. May we, like God, choose not to quench but to fan into flame the embers of faith within our brothers and sisters.
