One afternoon, in 2017, just a few days after Easter season had just concluded, I went to take a bed rest. When I woke up from a short nap, I realized that my left eye was hurting, and had a never-ending tear. I didn’t realize that the little pain was actually serious. Evening went, and morning came, the pain intensified, and my life was harder. I still had an expectation of the whole thing going to end by itself. Evening went, and morning came, those were two days. So I had to see the physician.

After the physician finished the diagnosis, I was forced to be without both eyes for a few days. Both my eyes were so well covered that I could hardly tell day from night. The places I could walk on normally became strange to me. I couldn’t read, or write anything. I hated life without light, utter darkness. There were many things I wanted to do, but I couldn’t, there was no light.

Scientifically, light is a form of energy that enables us to see things. Without light, we are no different from many people who are considered blind.

Traditionally, light was defined as truth, or awareness. This is one reason why historically, Africa was seen as a dark content, nothing was known about Africa. This is true for non-native africans back in the days.

Theological reality sees light as a perfect definition for God. It is written, “God is light, and in Him there’s no darkness”. This is sweet, isn’t it? It even contrasts it.

When looking at it theologically, it is vital to consider one fact though, God is light, but God never needed light in the first place. At the genesis of everything, it is recorded that:

  • The earth was formless.
  • Darkness covered the face of the deep
  • The spirit of God hovered—God is spirit, so it’s right to think that where His spirit is, there He is.

Formlessness, darkness, and God existed before the beginning. Now, it is right to remember that all things will remain in their uniform state of rest, or motion unless a force acts on it. Before the beginning, all these things were okay, existing together. But now that the beginning is to be, some things need to be set in order. That which is formless should have a form, and the darkness needs to find its place. But, which is to come first?

“Then God said, ‘let there be light’, and there was light”.

No audible voice

This was the most important foundation for the beginning to start. This light is not the sun, moon, or stars, it’s just light. It is upon this light that day and night were made, not the sun. But the question is, why light?

John 1 helps us to understand that actually light came after “word”. It is that word that became the light of men. God didn’t need light, but man needed it. Man can’t hover over water, he needs to walk on land. Man can’t exist in a formless state, he needs a formed state. For this reason, God made light for man.
